Circle of Courage- An assignment exploring Dr Martin Brokenleg’s Circle of Courage and how it aligns with my personal teaching philosophy. This assignment also explores how to utilize the Circle of Courage in the classroom and incorporate it, into my personal ways of teaching.

Everybody needs a safe place and a safe caregiver. One that makes you feel important, needed, special and valued. All students, even the most challenging personalities need to feel acceptance from their teacher. I sincerely wish to be that adult. The adult that sees the quiet kids, that hears beyond the words of the loud and boisterous child and acknowledges the ones so well behaved they are often less noticed. No student can be their best, if you do not treat them with sincerity and kindness.

Everyone has something they can contribute to the community. For some it is through academics, others their creativity and joy through music or arts. Some students strengths may lay in their ability to deal with others, or their willingness to help others. The adults in our student lives, which includes their teachers, have a responsibility to help recognize what drives and interests the students, and help build their strengths and temper their stretches.

Everyone could use a genuine, caring coach rooting for them. Having a coach that will look for alternate ways to teach a concept or skill if the student is struggling, is ideal. Students path to competence, understanding, and achievement is individual. Independence paired with self confidence, responsibility, and discipline come from teaching independence by mentorship, accompanied by warmth and caring.

Finally, I feel very strongly that empathetic and caring individuals help our communities and it is the ones that have the feeling that they have been left behind that are hurting and cause harm to themselves and others. If children feel loved and supported they can often learn how to support others and show empathy. Students who feel supported by their teacher, and who support each other regardless if they are ‘friends’ is an important part of making this world one that is comfortable to live in. It is a teacher’s responsibility to provide caring, coaching and modelling of inclusive, and generous behaviours.
