The homework debate. Some say it adds too much pressure on students and some say that pressure helps students adapt to real life pressures. Some say homework is too much, and others say it promotes good work ethic.
Where are you on the debate?
I am not trying to straddle the fence but I believe both sides are true! Students may have a lot of extra curricular activities, or they may find school challenging and in both cases students may need their time at home to decompress!
Homework for homework sake does not appeal. Learning how to study and learning what is needed to be done to achieve success though are skills I value. Homework that support these skills can lead to success. If homework is given and is critical, then it is easy to ask that homework is a priority. If the homework activity is meaningful, it can help with keeping students positive. If you are clear on how parents can support students (its ok to give breaks, show learning in alternative ways etc), then it is easier for parents to support their students with expectations that may be different from the homework style they remember from their school days.
LD online has a great handout for parents on how to support their learners with their study skills. Take a look: https://www.ldonline.org/ld-topics/study-skills/study-skills-handout-parents
